Isabel Aleandra L.; Desierto, Desiree A.Recent trends have shown that total crime has been decreasing as the number of policemen per region is increasing. This study aims to investigate whether these trends are an indication of efficient crime control and prevention by the police. Instrumental Variable Estimation was used to estimate the effects of unemployment, regional gross domestic product and police strength. The latter was instrumented by average temperature and regressed on total crime. In order to control. for time-constant factors, fixed effects estimation was applied. Results showed that independently, police strength does not affect total crime. Kristine R.; Kaibigan, Bernardo V.; Pernia, Ernesto M.This study uses panel data on index crime rates for the 15 regions of the Philippines over the period 1991-2003 to analyze the factors associated with crime in the country. As different types of index crimes are likely to be influenced by different factors, the total index crime rate was disaggregated into two: (a) crimes against person (murder, rape, homicide, an4 physical injury); and (b) crimes against property (robbery and theft). For both types of crimes, the study reveals that unemployment, inflation, poverty, and population density are positively associated with crime. Gross regional domestic product per capita, on the other hand, is shown to be inversely related to crime.Item Restricted Natural disasters and its effect on property crime rates in the Philippines(2009-10) Delizo, Gene Herly; Sequito, Monique Nikki; Desierto, DesireeThe article explains the effect of natural disasters to property crime rates in the Philippines. For this study, a two period pooled data of 49 provinces from 2006-2007 was used. Robust regression was used to cure for the heteroscedasticity issues present in this paper. With this, Filipinos in general are found to be cooperative during destructive and/or damaging occurrences as evidenced by an insignificant relationship between natural disasters and property crime rates.
