Item Restricted Factors associated with crime in the Philippines(2013-04) Tañedo, Dancel Joy C.; Ugalde, Paul Louie C.; Pernia, Ernesto M.Our study deals with the determinants of crime rate in the Philippines. We hypothesize that criminality is associated with such factors as congestion, poverty, income level and inequality, and schooling. We apply the ordinary least squares regression method to pooled cross-section and time-series data gleaned from the Philippine Statistical Yearbook published by the National Statistical Coordination Board. The results of our analysis reveal that crime rate is significantly influenced by congestion, unemployment, and income inequality. It aims to capture the impact more accurately by incorporating the interaction effect of total crime and median household income as reflected by the partial elasticity generated in the model. The study utilizes the hedonic regression analysis as the main empirical approach using data from cities in the State of California. Results show that the interaction effect influences prices at a 15% significant level but all other OLS estimates given the database are inconsistent with previous research.
