Item Restricted The relationship of household income and children's outcpmes: an analysis using longitudinal data from the Philippines(2014-04) Tong, Maurice Alexis Z.This paper examines the effects of children's household income during the younger years on outcomes such as educational attainment, test scores, BMI-for-age, and future income. Using the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey (CLHNS), this paper uses different models such as Poisson, OLS, and fixed-effects models to estimate income effects to analyze how income plays a role in development. This study fmds that income has statistically significant effects on most the children's outcomes measured, which corresponds with the related literature. Educational attainment, test scores, and future income all show positive relationships to the household income of the child. BMI-for-age showed statistically insignificant results, but the study found that household income has a positive relationship with a child being overweight.Item Restricted Earnings performance of graduates of selected UP colleges(2012-04) Co, Jade Kimberly L.; Garcia, Jorell Eric S.; Pernia, Ernesto M.Educational attainment is critical in determining one's future income. In effect, college degrees also affect employability and income. This study aims to find out whether there are marked variances in ~e incomes of the graduates with different degrees obtained at the tertiary level. .An online survey was conducted among the 2009 graduates of selected colleges in UP Diliman. OLS regression analysis was then applied to the sample observations to test the effect and significance of the hypothesized explanatory variables on current monthly incomes. This study concludes that college degrees do have a significant effect on incomes. Knowing which degrees yield higher income, reflecting the demands of the labor market, would inform young students better in their choice of academic courses that would determine their career paths.Item Restricted Correlates of job match probability(2012-04) Ferrer, Feliche Anne E.; Sta. Maria, Carissa Iris S.; Pernia, Ernesto M.This study aims to look into the various factors behind job match in relation to academic program completed. The data utilized in this research were collated through an online survey of the year 2009-2010 graduates of the University of the Philippines, Diliman. Graduates from three colleges of the university were selected for the survey, namely, the College of Engineering (Computer Science), the College of Mass Communication, and the School of Economics. Five variables were hypothesized to be significant correlates of job match: (1) gender, (2) academic program, (3) educational attainment of the mother, (4) educational " attainment of the father, and (5) academic honors. The logistic regression was used for the analysis. The results show that gender, educational attainment of the mother, and academic honors are not significant correlates of job match. On the other hand, academic program, and educational attainment of the father prove to be significant correlates of job match.Item Restricted The effects of educational attainment on the violence against women across regions in the Philippines(2011-03) Barit, Kenna S.; Orticio, Karen S.; Tecson, Gwendolyn R.Violence against Women (VAW) is defined by the United Nations as "any act of gender-based violence that results, or is likely to result, in physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women." In the Philippines, laws such as Anti-Sexual Harassment Act of 1995, Anti-Rape Law of 1997, and Anti-Violence Against Women Act of 2004, had been passed and implemented, yet were not able to fully resolve the problem of the growing incidence of VA W. The study examines how educational attainment affects VA W across the different regions in the Philippines. Four models are formulated, which encompass the different types of VAW: psychological, sexual, physical and general. The study utilized the Ecological Theory, where personal, relationship, community, and society variables are used to explain VAW. Using the cross-section data from the National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) of2008, the study ran four logistic regressions to determine the effects of educational attainment and other variables on the probability of the different kinds of VA W. Results show that educational attainment is negatively correlated to all sorts of VA W in the Philippines, that is, as women reach higher educational level, their chances of being victimized decreases. Given that, educational reforms should be devised to decrease drop-out rate and improve the quality of education. More importantly, primary and secondary education should be focused on, so that women will have an opportunity and a higher chance of reaching college. The government should increase the budget on education, effectively disseminate information about VAW, provide accessible help desks and counseling services, and reevaluate the existing anti-VA W policies, for the protection of women's rights and general welfare.Item Restricted Beyond 9 months: a study on the significance of early childbearing on a women's educational attainment(2002-11) Aguilar, Karla Antonette S.In this paper, we model and estimate the relationship between teenage childbearing at different ages and educational attainment. We employ a two-stage least squares estimation method to take into account the endogeneity and simultaneity bias of age at first childbirth and educational attainment. Using data from the 1994 Young Adult Fertility Survey (YAFS2), we find that teenage childbearing at any age substantially reduces years of formal education and hence the educational attainment of women. Our results suggest that "a teen birth is a teen birth", and that public policies that reduce teenage childbearing are likely to have positive effects on the economic well being of young mothers.Item Restricted The dispersion of the educational attainment of the working age population in the Philippines: 1948-1980(1983-03) Filart, Ma.
