Item Restricted An analysis of the relationship between food consumption and some demographic factors(1986-03) Mediavillo, Annie; Villaflores, Erminda A.; Herrin, Alejandro N.This study aims to determine the effect of some demographic factors, such as income, household size, education of meal planner, occupation of household head and location of residence (rural and urban) on consumption of some selected food items, namely; rice and rice products; sugars and syrups; fats and oils; fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk and milk products; dried beans, nuts and seeds; Vit. C-rich foods, green, leafy and yellow vegetables; other fruits and vegetables; and coffee and alcoholic beverages. The analysis centered on the two food consumption surveys of the FNRI done in 1978 and 1982. First, the 1982 food consumption survey was analyzed by getting the per capita percentage consumption of each food items. Then, the two surveys were compared to determine the changes in food consumption leve1s. The study reveals that the Filipino's diet is mainly composed of cereals, fish and vegetables. These food items constitute the largest share of percentage consumption of all food items. This trend does not change for all the demographic factors concerned.Item Restricted Characterization of the Philippine food manufacturing industry: a comparison of exporting and non-exporting firms(2005-10) Estur, James Daryll L.; Puno, Jan Michael T.; Bautista, Maria Socorro GochocoThis paper deals with the characterization of Philippine food manufacturers. It tests for significant differences between exporting and non-exporting firms in the industry. The data utilized were financial statements from the period 200 l through 2003, of such companies registered at the Bureau of Investments. The study used a dichotomous model (Probit model) to test for the attributes that differentiate the domestic-oriented firms from the firms catering the foreign markets. Results show that companies, which serve the local market, are more profitable, and tend to spend more on non-direct labor (managerial and technical personnel). Moreover, exporting firms were found to have relatively more direct labor costs and were less capital-intensive than their domestic-oriented counterparts.Item Restricted An excise tax on non-alcoholic beverages: a rational addiction approach(2007-10) Cuevas, Mary Anne E.; Masancay, Dustin RJ F.; Pernia, ErnestoThis study, using aggregate time-series data, estimates the demand for non-alcoholic beverages in the Philippines following the rational addiction framework of Becker and Murphy (1988). Analysis of the economic incidence of the VAT on non-alcoholic beverages shows that low income households are less burdened by the VAT levied on non-alcoholic beverages compared with sin products such as cigarettes and alcohol. Regression results also ·show that non-alcoholic beverage consumers are forward-looking. Consistent with the rational addiction theory, past and future consumptions significantly affect present consumption. Short- and long-run price elasticities are also calculated. In the short run, demand is price-inelastic; however, in the long run, the demand seems to be more price- responsive. It may take time for the goals of a sumptuary tax on non-alcoholic drinks to take effect.
