Item Restricted The effects of mergers and acquisitions of universal and commercial banks in the Philippines(2011-10) Alberto, Jocelyn O.; Feliciano, Kendra Clare S.; Tan, Edita A.This paper analyzes the ·effects of mergers and acquisitions on the performances of Philippine universal and commercial banks from 1997 to 2010. Throughout the years, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has encouraged banks to merge through incentives and more liberalized policies in an effort to make them more efficient and more resilient to adverse shocks. However, studies have shown varying results on the benefits of mergers. The paper assesses the performances of the banks based on a simplified CAMELS model composed of different financial ratios computed using the banks' financial statements. CAMELS stands for Capital Adequacy, Asset Quality, Management, Earnings, Liquidity and Sensitivity to market fluctuations. The results of the time-series analysis show that mergers may indeed pose positive benefits; however, it does not necessarily make the merged banks better performing than other banks, suggesting the possibility of other motives for banks to merge.Item Restricted The economics of merger in the telecommunication industry(1999-10-08) Cunanan, Sherleen; Lindong, Annie Rose; Herrin, Alejandro N.Liberalization of the telecommunication industry which resulted to a too crowded sector, accompanied by adverse effects of the Asian crisis, have been setting merger as a trend in the telecommunication industry. Telecom firms that already merged and those that are contemplating to do so have various financial and economic reasons for engaging in such activity. To be able to get a good over view as to why telecom companies choose to merge or not, major joint-venture deals within the sector have been studied and analyzed. Costs and benefits attached to merger are also examined. Since the probable success of a desirable merger pushing through can be explicitly and implicitly influenced by the government through its policies and regulations, the role of the government has been likewise assessed.
