A study of the marble industry in the local economy of Romblon: a structure-conduct-performance approach
(2005-10) Morato, Louise Jean Vivas; Tecson, Gwendolyn
This paper focuses on the marble industry of Romblon. It attempts to determine the factors behind its decline and the extent to which each of them affects the performance of the industry. The paper also attempts to determine whether the decline of the industry is the main factor responsible for the poor economic performance of the province. The study made use of the Structure- Conduct- Performance paradigm as framework to determine the factors behind the industry's decline. The competitiveness of the industry in both the export and domestic market is also determined to assess the performance of the industry. Based on the results of the study, the inefficient and uncompetitive structure of the industry as well as the conduct of the firms are the main factors behind its decline. The presence of cheaper imported substitutes also contributed to the decline. It should not, however, be blamed entirely for the industry's poor performance for it has only served as a reality check for the firms to become competitive in order to stay in the market. There is a need for the government and the firms in the industry to cooperate and collaborate in order to strengthen and boost the industry to make it more competitive in the market. More importantly, the firms must be educated on the the importance of producing efficiently and providing good quality products. They also have to realize that informative advertising is necessary in order to not keep the buyers in ignorance of the existence and the important qualities of their products.

A study of wage and employment relationships in the manufacturing, mining, and quarrying and private services sector in the Philippines
(2008-04) Baltazar, Sally P.; Fernandez, Linda Mae A.; Diokno, Benjamin
The study aims to test the relationship between the prevailing compensation basket and the factors that affect labor demand and supply in the Philippine manufacturing, mining and quarrying and private service sectors. The index of compensation and the average real wage, number of employed persons and gross value added to GDP of the selected non-agricultural sectors are the variables used in regression. Also the compensation index and the employment index will be examined to determine the inverse association of the computed compensation employment ratios of the three industries. The study also tests whether the value wages has appreciated so as to sufficiently compensate each worker's necessities. Wages will be quoted in real terms and will be compared to the consumer price index. Finally, the increase or decrease in importance of several professions dominantly employed under the three sectors will also be taken into account to determine the demand trend of highly skilled workers. The data range used in the study covers years from 1981-2006.

Philippine mining industry: an examination on copper, gold and nickel markets
    (2006-03) Mesa, Maria Monette F.
The Philippine mining industry is influenced by both local and international factors. International factors include metal prices, world production and consumption trends, and level of investments. The paper seeks to analyze the relationship of the country's mining industry to international variables. On the other hand, government policies on the mining industry set the legal framework which defines the relations among various stakeholders. It preconditions the environment for the industry's investments and specify the rights and obligations of the operators. It also acts to secure mining rights and indicates the terms of profit- sharing between the investors and the government. More important, it regulates the level of mining activities suited for broader economic, ecological and social goals of the country. This study focuses on the Mining Act of 1995 which serves to clarify ambiguities in government policy. Notwithstanding the different conflicts roused by the law, the Supreme Court upheld the legality of foreign ownership of mining corporations on December 2004. The paper presents a report on the industry's performance and identifies the major problems and issues that beset its path to growth and development. This study analyzes major modes of mining agreements as stipulated in the Mining Act of 1995. Historical background of policy initiatives will be provided. The markets for copper, gold and nickel are analyzed to demonstrate the dependence of local mining industry to international variables. Although local mining industry is influenced by local markets and policies, the direction of metallic exports lies in the development in world metals community.
