Item Restricted Effect of a fixed wage scheme implemented for bus drivers and operators on the total number of accidents in the National Capital Region(2013-11-05) Apostol, Justin Y.; Dailisan, Joseph Matthew A.; Debuque-Gonzales, MargaritaWith the high number of bus accidents in the metro, the Department of Labor and Employment executed Department Order 118-12 which implements a fixed wage scheme for bus drivers. This thesis aims to look at the effectiveness of the new policy in reducing the number of bus accidents in the National Capital Region (NCR). All monthly data covering the period came from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA). Authors regressed the number of bus accidents against variables such as a fixed wage dummy, number of bus trips, number of cars in NCR and weather and found that with the execution of a fixed wage scheme, the number of accidents in Metro Manila decreased. This implies that bus drivers can be encouraged to drive safely given the proper incentive.Item Restricted Road accidents in Metro Manila: trends and socio-economic costs (2003-2008)(2010-03) Capulong, Fatima Marie R.; Capanay, Kenneth Cornelius D.; Clarete, RamonSince the Philippines is a developing country, it is important to know how much of GDP is loss from road accidents. This study is divided into two main parts. First, it explains and analyzes road accident trends in Metro Manila from 2003 to 2008. A regression based on Andreassen's model is then made, which shows the relationship of fatalities to vehicle volume and population. Second, it estimates the costs of road traffic accidents in Metro Manila from 2003-2008. The cost components estimated are victim-related costs, property damage and administration costs. Moreover, by using the human capital approach, this study proposes a different method for the valuation of human life affected by fatalities and injuries. This is done by using vehicle type as a proxy for income. The valuation for fatal accidents (in Php) of private car users is 8,684,183; while for private motorcycles and public vehicle users, is 2,816,492 and 1,031,037, respectively. This paper hopes to bring the issue of road accidents to the forefront, by giving an estimate of how much economic output is lost from fatal, nonfatal injury and property damage only accidents. Also, recommendations are made in increasing road safety by improving the safety features of vehicles, the quality of road systems, and traffic management. These are investments worth pursuing to increase GDP and the quality of life.Item Restricted Effects of income inequality on road accident fatalities: 2007 individual data of the Metro Manila accident reporting and analysis system(2010-04-07)Income inequality has caused differences in the patterns of roadway usage. Those of the higher income bracket have enough resources to avail of safety measures for their car. Meanwhile, their counterparts in the lower income bracket can only avail of public transportation or motorcycles, which are more likely to cause a fatality among the drivers and passengers. This heterogeneity, therefore, poses a risk on the roadway users and causes the externalities of increasing the probability of fatal traffic accidents. In this paper, a logistic estimation is used to determine the effect of the type of vehicles involved in the 2-vehicle collisions on the probability of the accident to be fatal. The results are conclusive to the hypothesis made, with collisions involving smaller vehicles (motorcycles and cars) more likely to have fatalities than bigger vehicles (SUV and vans).
