Abstract
This paper looks into the effects of college admission and retention policy on student performance, as measured by student effort, and the incidence and length of overstay. The study is focused on graduates of three colleges from the University of the Philippines, namely College of Education, College of Engineering and School of Economics, who entered the university through the UPCAT in 1995. Effort is indicated by the effort gap, the difference between predicted grade and actual grade of students while the incidence of overstaying and length of overstay is indicated by subtracting the stay of the student in the university and the expected duration of the program from which he graduated. It was established that college retention and admission policy affects its ability to demand effort and the incidence and length of overstay.
