Abstract
The paper examines the effects of productivity on wages in the Philippine manufacturing industry from 1982 to 1998, engaging in a regional study. Working on a pooled data analysis, the study makes use of regression models having 2 dependent variables, nominal and real salaries and wages, respectively. Independent variables consist of Real Labor Productivity, Consumer Price Index, and Unemployment Level. Results of the study show that labor productivity has a strong relationship with salaries and wages.
To the extent that a relationship between productivity and wage can be presented, this will support that productivity is a significant factor considered in wage determination.
Thus, the relationship will help policy makers in making plans and formulating strategies to effectively promote productivity improvements that will contribute to the increase in real purchasing power and economic growth.
