Abstract

This paper analyzes the relationship between Generalized Weighted Average (GWA) and automatic admission in University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) of more than 30,000 undergraduates in UPD from 2007 to 2013. Automatic admission is significantly and negatively related to GWA. Students who were selected through automatic admission - foreign students, and Filipino students who attended foreign schools or local schools with International Baccalaureate programs - tend to perform worse in academics than students who were admitted through the UP College Admission Test. Therefore, I recommend administrators in UPD to review and possibly consider resetting the required minimum scores for three examinations in automatic admission.
